CSCU Assessment Toolkit

This Toolkit was developed by the CSCU Library Consortium’s Assessment Team in response to their charge of recommending best practices of implementing assessment data and analysis toward student success.

Part 1: Measure Impact through Learning Outcome-based measures

This section focuses on assessing how librarian-led instruction and research support translate into student learning outcomes

Librarian Support Area Outcome How to Measure
Refining research topics Student submits a clear, focused, researchable question Pre/post surveys, faculty rubric criteria, or annotated bibliography topics
Finding scholarly sources Student identifies peer-reviewed and credible materials Citation analysis in papers, faculty feedback, or source evaluation worksheets
Using databases effectively Students conduct keyword searches and applies filters Hands-on assessments during instruction, observation checklists, search logs
Citing sources correctly Students use proper citation format and avoid plagiarism Rubric-based grading of bibliographies or writing assignments
Evaluating websites and online content Student applies evaluation frameworks (e.g., TRAAP, SIFT) Quick in-class exercises, worksheet scores, or discussion responses
Understanding academic integrity Students can define plagiarism and explain ethical source use Exit tickets, short quizzes, or reflections following library sessions

Part 2: Measuring Engagement and Services Delivery

This section focuses on evaluating how students engage with librarian services and how effectively those services are delivered.

Service Area What to Measure Methods & Tools
Services Desk, Reference & Research Help Usage Frequency and type of research support provided Count of 1:1 appointments, chat transcripts, email reference logs
Instruction Classes How many students receive instruction Number of sessions taught, course coverage by subject or level
Resource Guide Engagement Student use of LibGuides or research pages LibGuide usage statistics, click-through rates, guide feedback surveys
Faculty Collaboration Integration of library support into coursework Faculty surveys, syllabi analysis, embedded librarian requests

Equity & Accessibility

Reach across diverse student groups Disaggregated usage data by modality, course level, demographics
Responsiveness to Student Needs Adaptation of services to evolving research demands Feedback loops, innovation logs, user interviews
