Definition

What is morbidity?

Morbidity is another term for illness. A person can have several co-morbidities simultaneously. So, morbidities can range from Alzheimer's disease to cancer to traumatic brain injury. Morbidities are NOT deaths. Prevalence is a measure often used to determine the level of morbidity in a population.

What is mortality?

Mortality is another term for death. A mortality rate is the number of deaths due to a disease divided by the total population. If there are 25 lung cancer deaths in one year in a population of 30,000, then the mortality rate for that population is 83 per 100,000.

Morbidity and Mortality Rate

MMWR Notifiable Diseases Data Tables Data published in MMWR from the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS) are now accessible in various machine-readable formats (at http://data.cdc.gov). Links to the new NNDSS formats are provided each week.
Search Morbidity Tables-CDC Data for selected nationally notifiable diseases reported by the 50 states, New York City, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories are collated and published weekly in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). Cases reported by state health departments to CDC for weekly publication are provisional because of ongoing revision of information and delayed reporting. Case counts in these query tables are presented as they were published in the MMWR. Therefore, numbers listed in later MMWR weeks may reflect changes made to these counts as additional information becomes available.
