Find Sources

Reports original research, usually the results of an experiment. Researchers
will report the methods and theories researcher used to arrive at those findings,
including limitations the researcher experiences.

  • Findings/Conclusions

Find Empirical Research:

stack of booksAn article that discusses the past research studies on a topic. Their main purpose is to pull together results of multiple studies to give an overview of a particular area of research.

Features of Literature Reviews

  • Published as journal articles in academic sources
  • Peer-reviewed work of scholars
  • Outlines important research trends, assesses strengths and weaknesses of prior studies, and identifies potential gaps in knowledge
  • Intended for an academic audience

Find Literature Reviews:

Both book reviews and editorials are opinion pieces. A book review offers a reader's opinion about a recently published book. An editorial is a person's opinion about an issue or topic. They're helpful when trying to decide whether to read a particular book or when weighing the arguments on either side of an issue.

Features of Book Reviews or Editorials

  • Published as journal or newspaper articles
  • Can be written by scholars, but is not typically peer-reviewed
  • No bibliography or works cited at the end of the article
  • Intended for a general or academic audience
