About periodicals and databases

What is a periodical?

Magazines, journals, and newspapers are all periodicals.  Periodicals are issued on a periodic basis (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.).  All periodicals contain articles in each issue.

Magazine articles are intended for a general audience of average reading ability.

Journal articles provide academic, professional, and technical research or review material in a specific field, and are written for an audience familiar with the subject and its vocabulary. Articles in these periodicals, especially peer-reviewed journals, are academically credible.

Whether you end up with an article in a print periodical or an article in a database, the easiest way to find an article on a given topic is to use the Electronic Databases to index both.

What are Electronic Databases?

Electronic databases are online sources that contain content from periodicals.

The NVCC library provides access to thousands of periodicals across 50+ databases. Topics of focus range from general to specific, and reflect the areas of study in courses offered at the college.
