Accessibility Guidelines for Video/Audio Content

For accommodation purposes, videos used in courses must contain high-quality captions.

  • Caption (or subtitle) all spoken content and music with lyrics. The people who are speaking are identified when they speak.
  • Provide an audio description of important visual information displayed in the video. Important sound other than dialog — e.g., footsteps approaching, doors closing, glass breaking — is included.
  • It is best practice to provide both captions and transcripts, although not always required. Transcripts should be easy to find near the audio/video itself and any links to the audio/video. transcripts include all audio information, including dialogue with the speakers identified, and all important sound.

If you use audio only, like a podcast or audio lecture, we must provide a text transcript of the spoken word. And that text transcript should be a document that’s accessible, preferably HTML, but it can be an accessible document of another format, such as .TXT.
