Middlesex ChatGPT and Generative AI-A Faculty's Guide

With growing concerns about students using AI tools, it is important for every instructor to establish clear AI policies that state whether GenAI is permitted. If allowed, the policy should specify how and when students may engage with GenAI. These guidelines should be clearly outlined in the syllabus to ensure transparency and understanding.

Sample AI Policy

Use of generative Artificial Intelligence (‘AI”) tools [ChatGPT or others] is discouraged as it can interfere with acquiring the writing and critical thinking skills that you will need in the workplace. If you use any AI tool, it must be cited, you must complete a supplemental assignment that will include answering 3 questions in your own words and submitting the entire text of the conversation with the AI tool. Failure to cite the AI tool and to complete the supplemental assignment including providing the conversation text will be considered plagiarism and will result in a zero grade on the assignment.

Supplemental Assignment: What was your prompt? What follow-up questions did you ask? What did you learn? Attach a copy of the full conversation with the AI tool.
