Middlesex ChatGPT and Generative AI-A Faculty's Guide

Creating AI-Resistant Assignments

Here are some tips:

  • Use experiential or project-based learning to give students the opportunity to learn by doing.
  • Educate students on plagiarism and set clear guidelines for use of resources.
  • Scaffold the research process by asking students to submit a topic proposal, a research question, an annotated bibliography, multiple drafts, etc. This requires students to show progression in a way that is difficult for tools like ChatGPT to produce.
  • GenAI tools do not have access to subscribed library databases. Use writing prompts that require students to incorporate specific sources into writing. For example, students are required to have one peer-reviewed journal article.
  • Consider using live chat tools for brief scheduled class discussions instead of traditional discussion boards to create more immediacy in a conversation.
  • Use collaborative learning and group discussions. Have assignments respond to a specific activity in the class.
  • Ask students to explain their thinking or write a reflection about the process, for example, research log.
  • Create assignments specific to your class or unique to the student.
  • Have students research or engage in local issues, within our own community, for example
  • Use time in class to work on assignments or part of the research paper.
