Manchester ESOL 1502: Using Gale's Opposing Viewpoints

Prepared for Christie Ward's Spring 2024 class.

Database: Gale's Opposing Viewpoints

Find a Topic

Pick a topic that you all find interesting. Your opinions about the topic itself will vary, however the only thing you have to agree on is that it is something that you all want to research! Scroll through the main page of Opposing Viewpoints, they always have about a half-dozen featured issues, and then you can click on Browse Issues to see the entirety of topics available.  You can also use the drop down menu to search by category.

Find Articles and Cite Them

Once you click on a topic, you will first be presented with an overview article that gives you a big picture of the issue.  Underneath that, you will see many articles pertaining to the topic grouped together by source type.  For your presentation, check out the: Featured Viewpoints, Viewpoints, Magazine and Newspaper articles.  These are sorted by relevance, but you can choose to sort them by Date-Newest.

When you open an article, take note of the various tools available to you in the database.  You can click on the "Cite" tool to generate a citation (it will also be at the bottom of the article).  You can also translate it or have it read aloud.
