Middlesex ChatGPT and Generative AI-A Student's Guide

This guide provides important information about Generative AI to students.

Is submitting AI generated papers considered plagiarism?

GenAI has begun to have an impact on academic work. A growing concern is the use of GenAI to create an entire project.. Doing academic work requires that the work you submit is your own writing with your own voice. Anything written by AI is not considered your own original work. It doesn’t matter which AI tool you use. Using any AI tool to write your paper is considered a form of plagiarism.

However, some instructors may indicate in their syllabus whether and how generative AI can be used in class. Please make sure to check with your instructor about AI policies. The ethical use of generative AI depends on the context in which it is being used and the expectations of your instructor.

Below is an example of AI policy in a syllabus:

Use of generative Artificial Intelligence (‘AI”) tools [ChatGPT or others] is discouraged as it can interfere with acquiring the writing and critical thinking skills that you will need in the workplace. If you use any AI tool, it must be cited, you must complete a supplemental assignment that will include answering 3 questions in your own words and submitting the entire text of the conversation with the AI tool. Failure to cite the AI tool and to complete the supplemental assignment including providing the conversation text will be considered plagiarism and will result in a zero grade on the assignment.
Supplemental Assignment: What was your prompt? What follow-up questions did you ask? What did you learn? Attach a copy of the full conversation with the AI tool.
