Threshold Achievement Test for Information Literacy

The Threshold Achievement Test for Information Literacy (TATIL) was developed by the Association of College & Research Libraries, based on the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education. TATIL is a standardized test that measures the achievement of Information Literacy (IL) education and allows educators to identify areas of strength and needs for improvement.

TATIL uses four modules to test both the knowledge and the disposition of students. The Modules for TATIL are:

            1. Evaluating Process & Authority

            2. Strategic Searching

            3. Research & Scholarship

            4. The Value of Information

Educators can use all of the modules or just the ones that suit their needs.

TATIL reports provide the test administrators with analyses of student performance including:

  • Summary results for knowledge and disposition dimensions
  • Detailed results for each knowledge outcome
  • Performance indicator rankings that identify students’ relative strengths and weaknesses
  • Performance levels indicators ranging from conditionally ready to college ready to research ready
  • Disposition results with descriptions that align with students’ scores
  • Breakouts for subgroups such as first year students or transfer students
  • Cross-institutional comparisons with peer institutions and other institutional groupings
  • Suggestions for targeted readings that can assist in following up on the results

Criticisms

  • Cost - Libraries must pay for TATIL per student per test. Different pricing options are available, with the cost being about $9 per student, as well as an unlimited annual contract, which begins at $10,000. The cost of this assessment can be a barrier for schools with limited budgets.
  • Time - TATIL requires time for the students to take the test, and time for the reports to be generated.
