The Madison Research Essentials Skills Test (MREST) was developed by James Madison University. MREST is a tutorial-test model within the General Education program's Foundational Skills course. The tutorial aspect includes videos that explain the Information Literacy concepts and practice exercises that are assigned tot he students. In the past, the MREST was a requirement that all students must successfully meet, or face an administrative hold blocking them from registration for the next semester.
JMU students are also required to take the InfoCore test, which is a shorter version of the MREST. The InfoCore test is taken as a part of the student's orientation prior to classes, and then again after completing three semesters. This allows for the school to track the progress of the students, and to see where improvements need to me made.
The Standardized Assessment of Information Literacy, or Project SAILS, was created at Kent State University in 2001 as a standardized information literacy test "that would allow libraries to document skill levels for groups of students and to pinpoint areas for improvement" (Project SAILS).
