What is Artificial Intelligence (AI) Literacy?

Artificial Intelligence Literacy is the ability to recognize, use, and critically evaluate AI technologies and their impacts.  AI literacy does not require the ability to create AI tools. Moreover, it should be viewed as a tool that can aid learning and should be used in an ethical way. The ability to use and evaluate AI applications and content will be a vital skill for daily life and the workplace as its use increases.

Adapted from Long, D. & Magerko, B. (2020). "What is AI literacy? Competencies and design considerations. CHI '20: Proceedings of the 2020 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems. 1-16. https://doi.org/10.1145/3313831.3376727

Why is AI literacy important?

  • AI is being incorporated into tools and services we use every day
  • Technology for AI advances on an almost daily basis - keeping up with trends is highly recommended
  • AI use will become a vital workplace skill
  • It is closely connected to academic literacies like media and information literacies

What is ChatGPT?

By now, ChatGPT has become so well-known whether you use it or not.   Here's a review of what it is and does:

  • ChatGPT stands for chat-based generative pre-trained transformer. It is based on a large language model called GPT-4 that can understand and generate human-like answers to text prompts.
  • It can generate essays, emails, lyrics, computer code, webpages, lesson plans, and more! It is also useful for summarizing text and creating questions.
  • It is not explicitly programmed. It is learning patterns and making decisions based on probability. It can make mistakes. For this reason, it is important to fact-check the output.
  • The launch of ChatGPT in November 2022 started a technology race of AI generative chatbots. Other chatbots include Bing Chat, Perplexity and Google Gemini.
