Middlesex Archive Scope Note

The Middlesex college archives are varied, making a traditional Scope note difficult. Areas of strength include student handbooks, commencement programs, college catalogs, newspaper clippings relating to Middlesex Community College, yearbooks, student literary magazines, student newspapers, and photographs of the college. 

Protocols of Using Middlesex Archives

  • Ask a library staff member for assistance if you need to access archived materials. Appointments are strongly encouraged: mx-library@ctstate.edu
  • Archival material may not leave the designated work areas.
  • Materials can not be scanned without supervision.
  • No food, drink, or gum.
  • No pens or pencils.
  • Wash and dry your hands before touching archival material.
  • Gloves may be necessary for handling objects or photographs in order to protect the materials from the oils and other residues left by hands. The Library will provide gloves.
  • Handle items carefully and maintain their order in the archives.

The Weird and the Wonderful

  • A Proclamation from the Mayor of Middletown proclaiming October 19, 1992 as "Chapman Hall Day."
  • Newspaper clippings following the course of World War II in the Pacific Theater, beginning with an account of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
  • A Resolution from the Middlesex Community College Regional Advisory Council honoring the Middlesex Community College Basketball Team, the New England Junior College Champions for the 1984 -1985 season.
  • A remembrance by Hugh Cox of the "Foxon Review," a neighborhood newspaper. Hugh's mother would pay neighborhood children to be reporters, then type up a news sheet.
    • An issue of the "Foxon Review," detailing all the neighborhood news.
  • An issue of the New York Daily Mirror from April 13, 1945, with the headline "F.D.R. Dead."
  • An issue of the New York Daily Mirror from May 8, 1945 with the headline "Nazis Quit War."
  • An issue of the New Britain Herald from March 20, 1936 with the headline "All Hartford Power Menaced by Raging Connecticut River."
