Nigeria

Nigeria is the most populated country in Africa and the sixth most populated country in the world. Located in West Africa, it is a federal republic of 36 states and a federal capital territory where the country's capital Abuja is located. The largest city by population is Lagos which is also the largest city in Africa and one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world. Nigeria has over 250 ethnic groups. The largest groups are the Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo and Fulani.

In ancient and pre-colonial times, the area of present-day Nigeria contained large Islamic kingdoms such as Borno, Kano, and the Sokoto Caliphate in the north and the Benin and Oyo Empires in the west. In 1914, the British consolidated the area into a Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria. The country achieved independence from Britain in 1960.

Following a series of military coups, the Eastern Region seceded in 1967 to form the Republic of Biafra. This sparked the Nigerian Civil War, also called the Biafran War, which lasted from 1967 to 1970. Nearly 2 million people died, many from starvation.

Nigeria is Africa's most significant petroleum exporter, and its economy remains heavily dependent upon the oil sector. Other key economic sectors include telecommunications, agriculture, and services.

High levels of wealth inequality exist in Nigeria. As of 2024, about 32 percent of its population lived in extreme poverty, and nearly 60 percent of the population are classified as multidimensionally poor.
