The New York Times Frequently Asked Questions

The New York Times

How do I find my college email account?
Log into https://my.ctstate.edu/  Under Student Self-Service, "Access Your Student Profile". Under "Bio Information", you will find your college email.

Why use an academic pass to read The New York Times online?
The New York Times requires a paid subscription for full access to its website, NYTimes.com. Visitors to the site who are not subscribers may only read up to 5 free articles per month. The Academic Pass gives you access to all content on the site.

I already have a Times digital subscription, which gives me unlimited access to NYTimes.com. What should I do?
As of July 2024, CT State Community College has upgraded to a new All-Access NYTimes subscription, which includes Wirecutter, The Athletic, Games and Cooking.
If you have an existing paid digital subscription, you need to cancel it before activating an Academic Pass. You can do that by clicking on the "cancel your subscription" link that can be found on the following LINK. You can also reach out to NYTimes customer care team (https://nytimes.com/contactus / 1-800-NYTIMES (698-4637)), who would be happy to assist with cancelling the account. Once the subscription is inactive you just need to visit accessnyt.com and follow the onscreen instructions to pull a pass using your college email account. If you have any issues with this process, please reach out to edu@nytimes.com.  Additional tip: if your email has migrated to @ctstate.edu you may simply create a new account using your new email address.

What are the restrictions?
Each day of their pass, users may access up to five free articles published between the years 1923 through 1980.  All NYTimes.com Pass users have unlimited access to archived articles outside the 1923–1980 date range (e.g., 1851-1922, 1980-present). Passes do not include e-reader editions, Times Premier content, WireCutter, The Athletic or The New York Times Crossword.

Can I access The Times outside of my college network?
Yes, as long as you have previously activated your Academic Pass from within your college network.

Can I access The Times from my mobile device?
You can access NYTimes.com and INYT.com on any device with a browser. You may also access the NY TImes via a mobile app. However, e-Readers are not supported. Visit nytimes.com/grouppass. After logging in, click on your account > "See All Benefits" to view your Pass benefits.

Why am I asked to log in on some occasions and not others?
This may be because your browser may clear its web cache/history if it is set to do so. In such cases you will need to log back into NYTimes.com with the email address you used to sign up, but you can still use your Academic Pass.

How do I renew my pass when it expires?
Return to the NY Times Academic Pass Page. Once you get to this page, click on "Already have an account? Log in here" and enter the same email address and password you used to create the account. This will renew your account for 1 more year. The site gives you the option of setting a calendar reminder to renew.

I still need help!
Please contact edu@nytimes.com or visit the help page or ask your local campus librarian for help.
