Agreement between King John I and a group of rebellious Barons in 1215 C.E., the Magna Charta is largely considered to be one of the earliest documents detailing the rights of subjects and the responsibilities of government. Though it's legal power did not hold for long, interest in the Magna Carta was renewed around the 16th century.

Recorded on wampum belts, the Constitution of the Iroquois Condederacy, also known as the Great Law of Peace or the Iroquois Book of the Great Law, dating somewhere between 1390 and 1500 C.E. it is known that the drafters of the U.S. Constitution knew of this law and likely were influenced by it.
