Housatonic Echo Smartpen

What's in the box?

When you check out an Echo SmartPen from the Library, the box will include:

  • Echo SmartPen
  • Charging cable
  • Sample notebook for trying out the pen and learning how to use it (not for classroom use!)
  • Extra pen tip
  • Instruction booklet

Please make sure each of these is returned with the SmartPen at the end of the semester.

Additional items:

  • When you check out the Pen, you will automatically receive a free dot paper notebook that will be yours to keep and can be used in the classroom. If you need an additional notebook, you may contact Marilyn Wehr.
  • If you are having trouble hearing the SmartPen's recordings, you may also check out a special set of 3D headphones that will record clearer sound.  Please ask for those at the Circulation Desk in the Library

Image of dot paper

The Echo SmartPen only works with special paper called "dot paper."

This special notebook paper is printed with a unique pattern of microdots, which allow your SmartPen to capture everything you write or draw.  You will get one free notebook when you check out the SmartPen from the library.  If you need an additional notebook, you can print paper from the Echo Desktop software or contact Marilyn Wehr for an additional notebook.

At the bottom of every page are several buttons that you can "click" by tapping the tip of your SmartPen to the printed image on the page.  Each page has buttons for Record, Pause, Stop, Menu navigation, and others.  These allow you to record and play back audio from that page and to navigate the SmartPen's menu.

On the front and back cover of each notebook, there are extra features like an advanced calculator, a status generator, a complete settings tab, display options, audio options, a navigator and a keyboard.  Although the SmartPen has been set up for you already, you may find you need these additional features to change from right- to left-handed, check the battery life on the Pen, or use the calculator
