Some helpful tips from past student experiences

  •  Cite where your statistics come from, both within your speech and as part of your end citations.
  • Use powerpoint as a tool - not a substitute for your speech. Cut down on the number of words and use more visuals on your slides.
  • A strong outline is your friend.  It will help you organize and present your thoughts clearly and concisely.  It will also identify holes where more research is needed.

For persuasive speeches:

  •  Include a call for action.  What do you expect the audience to do as a result of your speech?
  •  Treat each side of the argument fully and with respect (no bashing).  In other words, adequately address the opposing viewpoints.
