Middlesex PSY 2004: Child and Adolescent Development

Books 101

Why search for a book?  Books provide great historical perspective, a broad overview on a subject (as opposed to the specificity of journal and news articles), and can provide you with important background info for a research assignment.

When aren't books the best choice? Bear in mind that the lengthy publication process for books means that you won't be able to use them as information resources for events taking place within the past year or so (look for articles and web info). Remember to evaluate the author and his/her bias just as you would any other source.

How do I search for books? There are many ways to search for books including the online catalog for items available at Middlesex in addition to other libraries within the CT State College and University System, Google Scholar, and more.  The online catalog includes both books in print as well as online (fully-searchable and available 24/7).  Try using broad keywords; no sentences or phrases.  For example, the keyword 'bullying' will lead to more results than 'cyberbullying'. The books on bullying will include chapters on cyberbullying.  You can also string together keywords such as bullying and "psychological effects".

Research Tip 1: Don't ignore books just because you are running out of time.  Use the table of contents and index within each book to zero in on those chapters and key words that are just right for your assignment.

Research Tip 2: As you are searching, be sure to keep track of all the info you will need for your bibliography.
