Middlesex Faculty Info Lit Toolkit

History

In 2006, an Information Task Force was formed by faculty members from all program divisions as well as MxCC librarians in an effort to evaluate MxCC’s information literacy instruction and to design a new framework for its delivery. In the Fall of 2007, in response to President Nieves’ directive, the task force, chaired by John Shafer, Professor of Humanities/Arts, created MxCC's Information Literacy Learning Outcomes based on the Association of College & Research Libraries’ (ACRL) Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. In addition, it is important to note that these IL learning outcomes address the requirements stated in NEASC Standards for Accreditation.

!! Information Literacy Redefined !!

Information literacy standards as defined by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) date back to 2000. In 2014, A task force comprised of librarians and other scholars have created a extensive document redefining information literacy competencies for today's world. As stated in the new Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, the framework is based on a "cluster of interconnected core concepts, with flexible options for implementation, rather than on a set of standards, learning outcomes, or any prescriptive enumeration of skills".  The framework refers to threshold concepts ("ideas in any discipline that are passageways or portals to enlarged understanding or ways of thinking and practicing within that discipline") and addresses the need for metaliteracy (rather than information literacy) skill-building to accommodate new participatory digital environments.
