Middlesex Institutional Review Board (IRB)

An IRB is a committee that is charged with the task of reviewing, approving and monitoring all animal and human subject research to ensure the protection and ethical treatment of research participants.

All research involving human subjects requires IRB review and approval (or exemption- more on this below).  Thus, we want to bring the committee's existence to your attention and inform you about how to apply for IRB approval for a research study.

How do I apply for IRB Approval or Exemption?

Complete the application form below and submit it via email to Andy Levy (alevy@mxcc.edu).

How do you know if you need IRB approval?  All research involving human subjects requires IRB approval. However, much research that is conducted on our campus (e.g., educational surveys to assess the effectiveness of a teaching technique) is considered "exempt," which means that it does not require full board review. Exempt research DOES need to be submitted to the IRB so that we can determine that it is in fact "exempt" and then grant you the exemption.
