Voting Rights Act, 1965Considered by many to be a high point of the Civil Rights Movement, and a turning point for Black liberation struggles more broadly, the Voting Rights Act outlawed discriminatory voting requirements that had been implemented in many southern states to prevent the Black population from voting. Recent Supreme Court rulings, most notably Shelby County v. Holder and Brnovich v. DNC, have significantly weakened the VRA leading to calls for new legislation.
