The Combahee River Collective Statement, 1977The Combahee River Collective was an organization of Black lesbian socialists in Boston from 1974-1980. The collective formed, and later penned this statement, in response to what they saw as the racism of the mainstream feminist movement, the misogyny of the mainstream Black liberation movement and the homophobia of both. While important in its own right, the statement is also notable as the first example of the phrase "identity politics" as it is currently used and the foundation of the theory of intersectionality.
