Michael graduated in 1999 and earned an associate degree in Broadcast Communications from Middlesex. He then went on to earn a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree.

What is your job title and duties?
I started my 9-to-5 is in the Digital Marketing department at HomeServe USA (homeserveusa.com) as their email marketing manager. I managed email communications from top to bottom, including strategy, design and development, coding, deployment, and reporting. As our department is growing, the whole group also tends to wear many hats, from design to coding to website and campaign management. As of 2022, I now work as their senior art director.
I occasionally freelance as camera crew, grip, or gaffer for features and shorts in the area. And the occasional web or print design project—everything from CD jackets to children’s books to slasher flicks!
I am also a co-founder of the Newtown Yoga Festival (newtownyogafestival.com), and spend my time there managing the website, working PR and social, and generally helping to keep the fest afloat.
What originally brought you to MxCC?
After my first year at Gettysburg College, I decided it wasn’t a good fit. A friend of mine had recently enrolled at Middlesex, so I signed up to keep my studies going. I really enjoyed my time as a DJ on Gettysburg’s radio station, so the audio production classes brought me into the comm department.
Did you do an internship at MxCC?
Yes. I interned with Crane Productions. I still talk to the guys 15 years later! With Crane, I worked pretty much every production role there was: grip, camera, audio, gaffer, PA—you name it, I’ve done it. That internship led to continued freelance work and my first TV job at WTNH as a camera op in the studio.
How did MxCC prepare you for the workforce?
From day one in the communication classes, we were hands-on. I was shooting, editing, directing, even teaching other students. I entered the workforce with more real-world experience in media than grads from some of the top broadcast programs. Since graduating from Middlesex, I’ve worn many creative hats from production to marketing to creative direction, across different media channels—the building blocks are all there to be learned at Middlesex.
What was your favorite thing about MxCC?
The hands-on experience! There’s still nothing like living in a production 24/7 and presenting a final cut to an audience to the sound of applause, laughter, and appreciation. Theory is a must, but it’s the application of that theory really makes your work become a passion.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Remember that Middlesex is just the start of your education and career path. I now have bachelor’s and master’s degrees, as well as a great work history—all thanks to the opportunities that were available at Middlesex.
